Sentence Planning

The prison guidelines suggest that prisoner’s should be given a sentence plan, outlining their objectives, targets and any courses that need to be done within 6 weeks of arriving in prison. Unfortunately, due to cuts that have led to a shortage of staff and resources in prisons, these guidelines are very rarely complied with by the prison, leaving prisoners in a position where they do not know what is expected of them in order to be re-categorised at the earliest opportunity or how they should be managing their sentence.

This is not acceptable or fair to a prisoner who should receive the necessary guidance when they go into prison. For those that are in prison for the first time, due to serve a lengthy sentence or more so serving a parole or IPP sentence, the sentence plan is absolutely vital.
